Lucky's Update: One Paw at a Time

Lucky at his most recent vet visit. June 23, 2026.

Just a few weeks ago, 8-week-old Lucky was fighting for his life.

Found alone on a hiking trail kilometres from the nearest building, no one knows exactly how he ended up there. What we do know is that when he was discovered, he was in the jaws of a free-roaming dog and in desperate need of help.

A compassionate Good Samaritan rushed Lucky to safety, and he was transferred into the care of the Saskatoon SPCA and taken directly to a veterinarian.

The extent of his injuries was heartbreaking. Lucky had six broken ribs, extensive bruising, and serious lung contusions that made it difficult for him to breathe. Air had become trapped beneath his skin, a painful condition known as subcutaneous emphysema. Despite everything he had endured, Lucky remained bright, friendly, and eager for attention.

Today, we're happy to share that Lucky is now recovering in a foster home and improving every day.

After several days in veterinary care receiving oxygen support, monitoring, and pain control, Lucky was finally stable enough to leave the clinic. He has since settled into the care of an experienced foster family, where he is undergoing several weeks of strict crate rest to allow his body to heal.

If you ask Lucky how he feels about crate rest, he would probably tell you he's had quite enough of it.

As his foster family quickly discovered, this little puppy is feeling much better and has started testing the limits of his recovery plan. He's already trying to climb out of his potty pen whenever no one is looking and is eager to get back to all the important puppy activities he thinks he's been missing.

To keep his busy mind occupied while his body heals, his foster family has been providing enrichment activities, puzzles, and training games. Lucky has proven himself to be a smart, playful, and incredibly resilient puppy with a wonderful sense of curiosity and a goofy personality that shines a little brighter every day.

While we are thrilled with his progress, Lucky's journey is not over yet.

His veterinary care, medications, diagnostics, and ongoing recovery have come at a significant cost. Thanks to the generosity of our supporters, Lucky received the immediate care he needed without hesitation. Now, we are asking for your help to ensure we can continue to be there for animals like him.

When an injured or vulnerable animal needs us, there isn't time to wait. Because of supporters like you, we can say "yes" to the next Lucky.

If you would like to help support Lucky's recovery and the many other animals who rely on the Saskatoon SPCA for a second chance, please consider making a donation today.

Every gift helps provide medical care, shelter, rehabilitation, and hope to animals who have nowhere else to turn.

Thank you for being part of Lucky's story. We can't wait to share more updates as this brave little puppy continues his journey toward a bright future.
